What is a Matterport Camera?

The Matterport is a 3D camera mounted on a tripod. It is controlled with a mobile device; in our case, an iPad. When in use, the Matterport rotates 360 degrees on its axis, capturing images of the space in every direction, from top to bottom. The captured images are then processed to produce a 3D virtual presentation. The camera functions more like a laser scanner than a traditional camera.

From the 3D virtual presentation created with Matterport, you can extract high-resolution 2D and panoramic images from any point. You can also take surprisingly accurate measurements from the presentation, with measurement accuracy reaching up to 1%. This allows you to plan furniture, curtains, and even renovations based solely on the data measured from the presentation. The accuracy of the point cloud is of the same order and can be exported to CAD programs. We can also produce accurate floor plans from the virtual space.

How can you explore the 3D space presentations created with Matterport? Easily, with virtually any device—computer, tablet, or smartphone. If you have VR glasses, exploring the space becomes even more interesting and realistic!

Two Different 3D Cameras, Matterport Pro 2 and Pro 3

SEIPIX uses both cameras for 3D imaging depending on the property.

Matterport Pro 2

  • Primarily used for indoor photography but can also be used outdoors on cloudy days.
  • Utilizes infrared light imaging technology.
  • Can take 360° panoramic images outdoors that can be linked to the virtual space.
  • Photogrammetric point clouds can also be produced from the virtual space created with Pro 2.

Matterport Pro 3

  • An advanced 3D camera that also includes a laser scanner.
  • Enables the recording of a laser-scanned point cloud from the captured space.
  • Suitable for various spaces and conditions, including outdoor areas from sunlight to dim lighting.
  • Offers incredibly detailed 3D modeling of outdoor spaces as well.

Have you ever explored a virtual model?

1. Navigation

In the virtual presentation, you move around by clicking with the mouse or tapping on a touchscreen, depending on the device you are using. You move by clicking or tapping on the circle on the floor or ground in the presentation.

2. Examining Details

Zooming works just like in any other program, by scrolling with the mouse wheel or pinching and spreading on a touchscreen.

3. Mattertags

If information has been added to the presentation using Mattertags, the tag will open automatically when you hover the cursor over it or click on the tag.

4. Automatic Tour

By pressing the play button in the bottom left corner, you can take a walkthrough tour of the property without having to do anything.

Added Value and Information to 3D Space Presentations with Mattertags

MatterTag in a 3D Space Presentation

As mentioned earlier, information can be added to space presentations in various forms using Mattertags. Mattertags appear in the presentation as “dots” that open when you hover the cursor over them or click on them. You can write desired text in the Mattertag, link images, videos, or even music.

The color of the tag symbol can be changed, and its distance from the object can be adjusted. Mattertags are also utilized when adding extra features to the space using the MPEmbed add-on. In that case, the Mattertags are hidden. This way, they do not interfere with the virtual presentation but can be found in a list on the presentation’s TAGS tab.
